Joan Travé is a pianist, fortepianist, composer and lecturer. As a musician he works with both historical keyboard instruments and the modern piano. His repertoire ranges from the Renaissance to contemporary music, with particular attention to the performance practices of other eras and to improvisation.
Born in 1991 in Palma, Joan Travé made his debut as a soloist at the age of 16, performing Beethoven’s First Piano Concerto. Since then he has given concerts in numerous European countries, on stages such as the Frankfurt Opera, the Chopin Festival in Valldemossa, the Wiesbaden State Theatre, the FEL!X Urban Festival in Cologne, and the Holzhausenschlösschen in Frankfurt. He performs regularly both as a soloist and in chamber music ensembles.
Through collaborations with musicians such as Lorenzo Coppola, Eva Maria Pollerus and Carmen Leoni, he has developed his passion for historical performance and early instruments. He received particularly decisive training with Jesper Christensen in fortepiano, historical Romantic-era instruments, and early recordings.
In 2011 he presented a study on the manuscript of Chopin’s Nocturne in C-sharp minor, Op. posth., at the Chopin Museum in Valldemossa. In 2022 he carried out an artistic research project on Carl Czerny’s Pianoforte-Schule, funded by the Institut d’Estudis Baleàrics.
He trained initially with Lucía Luque, María Jesús Salvà and Ireneusz Jagla. He later studied piano with Miquel Estelrich and Manuel Carra at the Conservatori Superior de les Illes Balears. At the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt, he completed master’s degrees in piano (Prof. Catherine Vickers) and fortepiano (Prof. Jesper Christensen). He also received the Konzertexamen (Concert Diploma) in fortepiano (class of Gilad Katznelson) at the same conservatory. He additionally studied piano physiology with Laurent Boullet, as well as historical improvisation and stylistic composition with Michael Koch.
Joan Travé currently teaches fortepiano at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt and piano at the Peter Cornelius Conservatory in Mainz.
